I remember PMing with oz on HT, years ago, when you were first looking at places. I sent him some links to realtors near me. At the time, land was very reasonable around here. It's gone up a lot since then - more than the area warrants.

Hi, Jen! (I need a waving smiley) Did your tomatoes die? Of course they died...just as they were beginning to bloom. Sooo...I suppose I will try it again this year. Sooner or later, I will find something edible that will survive here! Hopefully, I will be coming by this weekend (if nobody is sick again by then).

When you come over, remind me to tell you how you can grow baby greens. You could do them on the windowsill.

Hi, my name is Carla and I am a recipe-aholic currently living in Colorado with 1 husband (married almost 18 years), 3 children and 1 dog. We own 3 small carpet cleaning businesses and are always looking to buy more (who needs sanity anyway?) I miss my former gardens terribly and I'm going to attempt container gardening this year so I will at least have fresh tomatoes and peppers. Gayle, I would also like to grow baby greens or anything in my window, plus I have 2 lovely window seats that I'm sure could accommodate some small plant pots. All ideas would be appreciated.

Carla, welcome to the forum!
There is a show called "Manic Organic". The guy who hosts it is in Canada. He takes a tray of dirt, like the kind you start seeds in, but without the little cups, sprinkles a variety of seeds (spinach, broccoli, radishes, beets, turnips, etc) on top of the dirt (heavier than you would plant them to start plants), covers them till they sprout, uncovers them, and lets them grow. Once they are about 2 or 3 inches tall, he just snips them off with the scissors and makes a salad. Then he replants.
You could have several of these going at once, staggering when you start them, so you'd have fresh greens all the time.

It's on Discovery Home Channel. I don't get it anymore, since we cut back on our programming. I never missed it when we still had it.

Seems like it was on around 10 pm. I haven't had the channel for about 6 months, though, so I'm not sure. Also, it might depend on which satellite provider you have. I watched it on DirecTV, but I have Dish Network, now. Here is a link to Discovery Home's listings for Manic Organic, including descriptions of each episode~ tinyurl.com/2afo8c

Thank you, Debi. You're a good friend, a good cook, and a font of knowledge about growing, preserving, and preparing food.
Karla, welcome to the forum! I tend to stay up kind of late, so it will be nice to have company!

Hi Gayle. I finally made it here. I guess I'll introduce myself. I'm Susan from HT, BH, and Carla's. I'm another one from KY. I live on almost an acre of land right on the edge of a small city. We've talked about chickens, but not sure if we'll go that route. I do raise gardens, do canning, dehydrating, sewing and artwork. I've been married to Mike for 33 years today. We have 4 grown children, 3 sons and 1 daughter. For the moment we have an empty nest, but my youngest and oldest sons(currently living in Hermitage TN) will be moving home in the next couple of weeks. My daughter lives in Washington state married to a GI. The middle son lives about 5 miles away with his girlfriend and her 4 kids. I'm looking forward to sharing recipes.
Susan
