How wonderful. One of my sisters is expecting in November. Another sister has given me the same instructins that you have and that one will not make an appearance until December or not.
I would LOVE a jersey. I used to actually buy Jersey milk when I lived in the Sacto area. It was so nice, rich and creamy. Oh, the cheese you could make with that. YUMMY!!!

I suppose so. Right now I'm getting all the milk I need and to spare off the one goat I'm milking. A jersey might be fun, assuming she is not a freemartin. But what I really was hoping for is a couple of beef cows to stick out on the pastures.

So I've had the calves for a week today, and they are both coming over for their bottles, so I thought they were ready to turn out into their little field. They ran and frolicked together around the perimeter at least a couple of times, and were having great fun. (They'd been in separate coops to keep them from sucking on each other.)
Then I went out to give them their midday bottles. Maybe they weren't ready for the field, after all. Neither would come to me. The least wild one eventually ran into the barn, where I was able to corner her and give her the bottle.
The other one took me a couple more laps around the field before I finally got her to run into the barn, and I channeled her right back into her small coop. Even then I couldn't get her to settle down enough to come for the bottle, and eventually had to get her in a headlock again to bottle her.
Maybe we weren't quite ready after all. I left them cooped, and may or may not let them out for part of the day tomorrow.

I have enough goat milk in jars left for about 2 more weeks. They'll maybe get one bottle a day for awhile after that if my goat doesn't go dry. They're also eating creep feed twice a day, and a little hay.

Me too, Michelle. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) But Dave says if I had a cow it would just be a giant puppy for me. I think when raising meat, I'll go with turkeys next, then a pig, and then maybe a cow. I have to work up to it. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

The nice thing about turkeys is it's hard to feel bad about eating something that stupid. The bad thing about them is that they are stupid, nasty, and if you're not very careful, will get the same leg problems as the meat chickens. Disclaimer: I have not raised heirloom turkeys, only broadbreasted. But I was not impressed with them. The meat was good.

That was one of the pigs I raised. Both were around 500# when I finally got to butcher them. Lot of meat. It'll be a while before I need to raise another!
