I have subscribed to Countryside in the past, and I tried it again this past year. Most of the articles are good, and I occasionally learn something really good. However, this last issue sort of galled me. I counted 5 articles about political stuff, the economy, peak oil theory, business, etc. I don't want that in my Countryside and Small Stock Journal! I don't want any political stuff in a magazine that's supposed to teach me about how to do things better on the farm. The article that really made me mad was the long one that started on p. 28 and finished on p. 34. It talked about population control and peak oil theory. Immediately following was an article about MORE population control . Then a couple articles about business. And finally another article about business and profit. There were almost 21 pages of non-agriculture "economic theory" articles. The magazine has 114 pages this month, so about 20% of this month's magazine really shouldn't be there in my opinion. If future issues don't have more 'how-to' articles by good, real life experts, I probably won't subscribe anymore. For what it's worth, the recipes are usually good, and the food and gardening articles are great. I'm just not sure the magazine is worth the $18 a yr.

I did not like that peak oil article, neither part 1 or part 2. It was like way too many pages of "put your head between your legs and kiss your bum goodbye!" So hopeless. At least this issue had a counter-viewpoint to his take on overpopulation.
I used to subscribe to Mother Earth News but I noticed that I spent half of my time getting mad and fuming about the articles on overpopulation and other stuff. Also, they would leave out necessary information about certain things in an effort to sway people to their point of view. I had to cancel that one.

I agree about the political stories. That's not what this mag is supposed to contain.
I did, however, really enjoy the article about real life in the 1800's. This era has been romanticized as being a "simpler" time. We tend to forget what a truly hard life our ancestors had.

I also am not fond of the articles that are not directly related to homesteading .
I intend to write to the publishers of Countryside and state my position on that. If we all did that perhaps they would change their format to a more homestead friendly position.

In a way I can understand if they run one or two, if the issue directly involves homesteading. But y'all are right; they are putting too much of that stuff. Let's do write to them.

That's a good idea, Bob. I think they might be getting a lot of their story ideas from homesteading forums.

Did y'all get your new issue yet? Skip straight to the story about the lady's first day of owning chickens. I like to fell off my chair I was laughing so hard.

I got my new issue a few days ago, but haven't had time to read it yet. I had it on the kitchen table to read while things were cooking, but somebody moved it.

Lots of good articles in this month's issue. I enjoyed the one about old age and homesteading, although a lot of it was just plain common sense. Also the one about Hybrid vs. Heirloom seeds was good. Harold and I have tried to switch over to as many open pollinated seeds as possible in our gardens. Another article that wasn't much for information, but just common sense, was the one called Sustainability in the Kitchen. It was entertaining anyway. At least this month's issue didn't have any political garbage in it.

I've been re-reading back issues from a couple years ago. I do think the magazine has changed somewhat over the past year. I like these back issues; I don't remember reading any of this before. Probably because I zipped through it so fast the first time.
