If you have a paper shredder, that would work, too.

Some hens will stand up to lay their egg and you need something soft under them.

A lot of my hens stand up when laying.I just use straw most of the time.In the summer I pick up left over hay in the fields next to my house.

Dan got me a bale of hay for the chicken coop. One bale will last us a long time, probably till fall. Dan is planning on making hay this summer (I'll believe it when I see it) so I should have plenty for winter, even if we only save 3 bales and sell the rest.
If that doesn't pan out, I figure on using shredded paper. I already have 2 shopping bags full and more in the shredder.
