I'd go for the barn too! You do want roosts because they will stay healthier than if they sleep on the ground.
Be sure to put copper sulfate in the water. 1/4 tsp per gallon with a splash of any type vinegar. It will keep them from getting blackhead or worms.

I will do that, Kim. These guys sure are going through the water! I have a 5 gallon waterer and we're having to fill it twice a day.

Are they dumping it?

Nope, drinking it. They don't even seem to be splashing any on the ground.

That is odd, I've never known turkeys to drink that much.

It's hot, nearly 100 degrees, and they're too stupid to sit in the shade or the coop, so they're guzzling all the water they can hold. It doesn't seem to be hurting them any.
The chickens are laying better. We're getting more than a dozen eggs a day now. I feel like I'm rich, I can use all I want and not run out.

i'm sure glad you've been able to get cracked corn - haven't seen any around here for months - isn't it amazing how much wisdom and experience can be tapped into on our little forum ?

Is there a corn shortage? I hadn't heard anything about it.
I got my feed directly from the mill that supplies most of the feed stores around here.

Maybe cracked corn doesn't keep as well in the heat. If you know somebody with a wood chipper, that would make short work of grinding your own.

We don't give our chickens cracked corn in the hot months. I've read that digesting it raises their core temp, and they sure don't need that. I got them some black oil sunflower seeds for snack last night. High protein with less digestive effort.

Gayle, get them a light colored, hard plastic kiddy pool. They will stand in it to cool off and may lay in the water. Just let them have it when the weather is hot.

I put my kiddy pool out for Turkey yesterday. She drank out of it, but didn't go in. I might pick her up and set her in it today. She'll sure stand in a water pan, though! At least she can't tip the kiddy pool over!

How do you keep them from drowning in the pool? I've had turkeys drown in an inch of water in a bowl.

Maybe that's just natural selection.
