I used to plant whenever, then I learned about moon signs, that did seem to help garden production, but I often got a late frost that wiped me out!
So then I heard about Nature Signs.
Folklore goes like this...
When the dandelion blooms bright yellow, plant your cool weather crops.
When the chives bloom purple, plant your warm weather crops.
The first year it was in April that the dandelions bloomed, last year it was almost June!

Here they say to wait till after blackberry winter to plant warm weather crops. I've been watching for 17 years and there's some validity to that. Nearly every year, we have a cold snap when the blackberries are blooming.

We had dandelions blooming over a week ago, then got hit with single digit windchill, teen temps, snow and ice. And all of that came after thunderstorms and tornadoes.

That dandelion thing wouldn't work here. They bloom in the spring here, but we plant the cool weather crops in late summer. First thing my grandpa told my mom when we moved to Florida, though, was forget everything you ever knew about gardening.

M, I'm thinking maybe they don't grow that far south. I'd never seen one until we moved up to Jacksonville. We have two kinds here, but my mom (from CO) says one of them is not real dandelions. That's why I don't fool with the greens. Afraid I'll poison myself and the fam.

I thought dandelions were ubiquitous, like flies and those fake ladybugs (the ones that bite). Learn something new everyday!

I'd never seen those fake ladybugs until this year! I thought y'all were pulling my leg until one of them jokers bit the inside of my arm the other day! Flies we have plenty of though! Kim, next time I blow the dandelion fluff, I'll turn to the west and blow it towards ya! Maybe one will float over there to TX.

And all the northern people sit around laughing at the southerners who spend good money on dandelion seeds, when they are weeds everywhere else. JK!!! I noticed Johnny sells a lot of seeds for people who are growing to sell. Makes sense to grow dandelions as a crop if you have a market for the greens or the wine.

If you trace their 'roots' back far enough, I think every garden plant started out as a weed somewhere. I know that persimmons, black walnuts, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, ginseng, passionfruit, sumac, and several other things are 'weeds' here.
