"Today I am taking an action fully within my legal authority, an executive action taken by Democrat and Republican presidents before me, to spare the lives of two turkeys, Mac and Cheese," Obama said.

Other than it is a photo op, does it have a purpose?

The turkey-pardoning thing is totally stupid, and it's one of those traditions that should probably be re-thought. I think back in the days of Truman, chickens were more popular than turkey, so presenting turkeys to the White House was sort of an advertising thing to promote turkey growing. In all honesty the association of turkey with Thanksgiving is stupid, too, because the original Pilgrims probably ate venison and clams more than wild turkey. And when folks call Thanksgiving "Turkey Day" that really fries me. OK, end of rant.

Dave and I were talking about that "turkey day" thing the other day. I think people do it because when you say "thanksgiving", that implies giving thanks to a higher power for providing whatever you're thankful for. A lot of people don't want to acknowledge that there is anyone higher than mankind, so "turkey day" lets them get by with forgetting God (once again). Football and it's accompanying idolatry is the only part of Thanksgiving that frosts me, and fortunately, we don't have it at our house.
