Dave's mom had a son 3 years before Dave, before she was married to Dave's dad. He (Craig) lived with them until he was about 10. Then he was sent to live with their mom's sister, Carol, in Arizona. That was supposed to be temporary. But then, their mom died, less than 2 years later. So Craig never saw his mom again. When Craig was about 14, he came to stay with his brothers, which was after Dave's dad had married Mellivene, who is still Dave's step-mom. Craig wanted to live with them, but Mellivene said no. Eventually his dad took him, and they lived somewhere out west. Dave and the 2 youngest siblings never saw him again.
For a while, in the early 80s, Craig lived with the next younger brother, Travis, out in Texas. Travis told Dave that he had to ask him to leave, though, because he just was "no good." He was very much into the hippy thing, anti-gov't, anti-God, into drugs. Dave talked to him once on the phone while he was at Travis' house.
For the past 10 years or so, we have been looking for Craig on and off, via the Internet. Not a wide scale manhunt, but you know, just Googling him and stuff like that, checking obits and all.
Well, lately I have gotten back into the genealogy thing on Archives.com. I keep hitting brick walls on a few of the people, but yesterday I was searching for a birth record for Dave's mom, trying to see if I could get any more info on her dad. Well, a birth record came up, but it was for Craig, with his DOB, the correct spelling of his middle name (Allan - kind of unusual), and her exact name as his mom. That gave me info about him that I didn't have before. Archives didn't have anything, so I just plain old Googled him with what I had.
Well, we found him. Turns out he died May 28, 1991, and is buried in a National Cemetery in Riverside, CA.
It's sad to think that he died so long ago, only 33 years old, and none of us even knew. As soon as I told Dave last night, he jumped on the phone to tell Travis. Neither were really surprised, but they were both kind of sad that they never really got to be brothers with him.
