-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Instant Oatmeal Packets
Check the cereal isle for more flavor ideas. The possibilities are endless! 3 cups Quick-Cooking Oats Salt 8 Plastic Sandwich Bags
Put 1/2 cup oats in a blender and whirl at high speed until powdery; reserve in a small bowl and repeat procedure with an additional 1/2 cup oats. If you're using a food processor, powder the 1 cup of oats in one motion. Into each sandwich bag put 1/4 cup un-powdered oats, 2 tablespoons powdered oats, and a scant 1/4 teaspoon salt. Store in a box or airtight container.
To serve: Empty packet into a bowl. Add 3/4 cup boiling water; stir and let stand for 2 minutes. For thicker oatmeal, use less water; for thinner, use more water. (I microwave for 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 minutes or until done on high)
Apple-Cinnamon Oatmeal: To each packet add 1 T. sugar, 1/4 t. cinnamon, and 2T. chopped dried apples.
Cinnamon-Spice Oatmeal: To each packet add 1 T. sugar, 1/4 t. cinnamon, and a scant 1/8 t. nutmeg.
Fruit and Cream: To each packet add 1T. dry milk and 2T dried fruit or fresh fruit after cooking or jam.
Oatmeal with Raisins and Brown Sugar: To each packet add 1 T. packed brown sugar and 1 T. raisins.
Sweetened Oatmeal: To each packet add 1 T. sugar
Wheat Germ Oatmeal: To each packet add 2 T. any kind of wheat germ

Gayle, we can't eat oats from the grocery. I buy the whole organic oat groats. For instant oatmeal, I parch the whole grains in the oven till lightly brown. Let them cool, then put thru the grain mill. A couple tablespoons of the flour, mixed with hot milk, dash salt, sweetener (honey or homemade syrup, not artificial), and you have breakfast.

CC I bet thats good. I bought 50 lbs of regular oatmeal for long term storage. But for every day eating around here I use quick oats. I put them in a soup cup, pour boiling water over them and set a plate on top of the cup. In 4-5 minutes I have oatmeal. I like the texture better than instant. But thats just me. Thats how we cook Raman noodles. I smush them up in thepkg. Put them in the soup cup with the flavoring and pour boiling water over them. Cover and let them stand a few minutes. We tried cooking them once and didnt like it.

Oat groats are whole hulled oats. They haven't been rolled or cut. The equipment used to roll and cut oats is frequently shared with other grains. Bethany has celiac and can't eat the ones from the store. The oat groats taste better too, they taste like oats, not the box. I order from walton feed and they come on the pool truck. They will send your order UPS if you can't make a pool truck order.

If you have an Amish or Mennonite store near you, they carry groats, too. (at least the one near me does)
