I made this tonight. I spread the meat mixture fairly thick on the bottom half of the buns. I still ended up with 16 burgers from ONE pound of meat! This is a VERY frugal recipe and it's delicious, too! Everyone liked it.
Poor Man's Hamburgers Spreadable burger that tastes delicious.
* 1 lb. of ground beef * 1/2 cup ketchup * 1/4 cup mustard * salt and pepper to taste * Enough milk to make meat spreadable Combine first 4 ingredients; mix well. Add milk a little at a time until meat is very spreadable. Spread meat mixture on half of hamburger buns. Broil until meat is done and edge of bun is golden brown. Butter other half of bun (sprinkle with a little garlic powder, if you like) and broil till golden brown. Top with your favorite condiments.
You can also add pizza sauce and cheese after burger is cooked and continue to broil until cheese melts to make pizza burgers.

My sister thought this recipe was funny because hamburger used to be considered poor man's steak.

I have to ask a question. Do you mean you cook the meat mix on the bun. Or is the meat cooked first. I'm so tired my eyes are blurry. So is my brain.

You put the raw meat mixture on the bun, then broil it till the bun is browned around the edges. I know that sounds like it would let the blood soak into the bread, but I had one fall off the bun and it was perfectly cooked all the way through and the bun was just barely damp, but not bloody looking at all.
I've even made the mixture ahead and left it in the refrigerator for several hours. It didn't seep any blood at all.

Thats what I thought it said. I'm goin to try this. Sounds like something the guys would like. You know making the meat up and getting it cold is probably a good idea. Seems like that would make it hold together better.

When you spread it on, just don't spread it really thick. It will cook through, but it will be mushy when it's done. It's best to spread it about as thick as a McDonald's regular hamburger. It firms up better that way.
