I have picked up oil lamps and oil for our grown kids for presents.I intend to get good lanterns of some kind too.Last winter when the blizzard hit they didnt have them.Yes Mom is known for her practical gift giving. One year I gave our son and his wife a covered trash can because she had been wanting one for a long time. They thanked me for it for years.

Willa, I had no idea what to get my kids for Christmas this year, but your post gave me a whole new line of thinking. I usually get them what they ask for or something fun, but I think I'm going for practical this year, too.

Thats where we are headed. My kids have too many playthings as it is. This year I'm goin to do socks and sweats to keep them warm. My sweet daughter doesnt prepare for keeping them warm if the power goes out so meemo is going to do that this x-mas.

I think I'm going for socks, underwear, t-shirts (to wear as undershirts, like when we were kids) and things for when the power is out (maybe a safe way to cook or heat - or both)

I like the idea of a "power outage kit". That could be handy no matter where you live. Y'all have given me a great idea. I think I'll put something like that together for each of the kids. Staying warm is not a big issue here, but nobody likes sitting in the dark or the boredom that comes with it. (Not boredom for me, but you know how these electronic-dependent young'uns are! )

I feel more and more like Scrooge as I get older. I no longer enjoy trying to find things to please everyone. I'm still doing it, but I don't enjoy it.

I have one DIL that gets sick if she smells the burning lamp oil to long so I want to purchase an olive oil lamp for her.The ones I have seen are from Lehmans.

I love choosing and giving gifts. It's decorating the house I don't like. If it were up to me, I wouldn't have any decorations, not even a tree.

That's an idea, Gayle. I just had another thought. Mama and I could work on them together, and she could whip up a throw-size blanket out of scraps to put in there, too. I was thinking maybe a lamp, some candles with a holder, matches, a battery-powered personal size fan if I can get them this time of year, some snacks, and maybe a couple books.

Valerie, I don't know if you noticed or not, but the radio I linked to is capable of recharging cell phones and other devices that use USBs.
Something else you might consider (and me, too) is solar lights. They can recharge during the day (they don't need much light to charge them up) and they'd stay on all night. I like them better than anything with fire because they're safe. I've never heard of a solar light burning down a house. If you choose them carefully, solar lights can also be used to recharge batteries, especially AAs (look at the voltage on the light and the size of the batteries inside)

Hmmmmm, such good ideas you ladies have! As it stands right now, folks will be doing good to get cookies from us this Christmas! But just in case things pick up, I'll keep popping back here to check for more ideas. Y'all are so good.

Got a Brylane Home catalog today. They have these fleece blankets, any size (even King), for $20, with a free throw size fleece included! I've bought most of my bedding and curtains from them over the years and they have good stuff. I'm gonna get one of these for each of the kids, and probably one for us, too, since we've given away so many blankets over the years that we only have one that fits our bed.
