I'm going to have to try that. I can't wrap my head around a candle made completely of fat not melting into a puddle in just a few minutes. I already have some washed grease in the fridge.

The article says they don't smell like bacon, but I'll bet, if you added some liquid smoke to the grease when you melted it, they would.

I just took a look. The only way I know to get lye is online and I don't think I want to do that because of Homeland Security and all. I had actually planned on using the grease in the fridge to try and make soap from washing soda in place of the lye. I tried it with baking soda, but it wasn't a strong enough alkaline to make it set up. All it did was thicken it into a gel.

ahh thin it out some and you have shower gel and some essential oil.

That's what i ended up doing with it. I put it in a pump bottle and put it on the bathroom sink. The longer it sat, the thicker it got. I had to keep adding water. Eventually I had 6 bottles of it and it was still getting thicker. That would have been ok, but, the more water I added, the less soapy it was. I finally ended up throwing it out.

Have you looked at Ace for Lye? That's where I get mine.
Seems like a waste of good bacon grease to me!!

Unfortunately, the nearest Ace to me is 50 miles away. I've checked both hardware stores in my county, one in the county to the east, and 3 in the county to the west. Those are the only ones I know of. I also checked Walmart and Lowe's.
It's hard to explain how rural I am. The 'city' I go to sometimes is 30 miles away and most city people would consider it a small town. I think the population is around 5,000, about the same as my whole county.

Gayle, your "rural" sounds a lot like ours, except we have 4 "towns" to choose from, each 20 miles away. Our hardware stores don't carry lye, either. Too much meth in these outlying areas.
Wouldn't it be funny if a person made bacon grease soap and didn't get all the smell out. Dogs and men would be following them around!
