I wish I could get some of those buckets! I'm going to a different town today and one of the stores has a deli. I'm going to ask there. I'll post later, if I get any good deals. I'm planning on going to Save-A-Lot and the feed store (the one that carries OP seeds).
My house is torn up right now, because we're replacing the floor and walls in the storage room (had a bad leak) so I have no idea where I'm going to put whatever I buy today. It will probably end up in the living room. *sigh*

The news just keeps getting worse, doesn't it?
I got all my garden seeds and onion sets today. The lady who was getting them for me said that I must have a big garden. I told her I was buying enough for at least 2 years (I already had a lot at home, too, but I didn't tell her that). She said, with the way food is going, she expects to see a lot more people growing a garden and that she is making hers bigger and is going to can as much as she can. I told her that was a good idea and to stock up on everything she could afford. She said she would.
The funny part was when she started talking about how she worried about the people who don't see what's coming - all they have to do is listen to the news or pick up a paper. It was like talking to all of you! I'm glad to see other people finally getting it.
I went to SAL too. I got a couple of cases of sauerkraut, one each of tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, mixed vegetables, and canola oil. I got some cocoa (2), oatmeal (3 of the big ones), American cheese (5#), Velveeta cheese (4#), margarine (6#), and dried beans (16 lbs, I think).
I also got some milk gravy mix to try. I tried a pack when I got home. It wasn't as good as mine, but it was ok. It would do in a pinch. Of course, I didn't need a pan of gravy in the middle of the afternoon, but we were hungry, so I put the leftover cabbage from last night in it, added a bit of butter, and called it soup. It wasn't great, but it was ok with crackers in it. I think it would have been good with cheese in it, too, but it was 2:30 and we hadn't had lunch, so we just ate it like it was. I was tired of fooling around.

Another thing you can do with the gravy mix is add some onion (I used onion powder), a 10 oz bag of frozen broccoli (thawed), cheddar (2c or so) and parmesan cheeses (1T) and a bit of milk to thin it down...broccoli cheese soup. I made that one day and it was really good...tasted like Big Boy's!

Today I added this to my stock.
100# of long grain white rice (I bought all the 20# bags they had in that brand, the other brands were higher) 10# of whole wheat flour 15# of unbleached all purpose flour 3 cases of evaporated milk
The rice was the only product not on sale. Drats! If I'd bought it last week I could have gotten it $3.25 cheaper. I'm thankful I got it now though, because the price is going to go nowhere but up.
I wished I'd had more money to spend. I'd have bought more flour and milk while it was on sale.

in the last week, I have added about 125 pounds of flour, to my preps, and several pounds of beans, several cases of milk, [canned], and going to add more seeds, i bought alot of seeds yesterday, and going to get more, because I think we might not be able to get them next year, and might not be able to afford them. so I am like Gayle, I am loading up. on all i can get. we just have to get these in gals, and do it with in the next 30 to 60 days.

You girls are doing great! I can't tell you how relieved I am that you're doing this! It really could save your lives.
Gayla, I'm glad your hubby is on-board. That makes it so much easier! Mine didn't used to be, but now he brings me things when he finds a good sale. He brought home 50 lbs of potatoes last week.

How do ya'll store your flour, corneal, grits and rice without buckets? I store most of mine in the freezer, at least for a while. Some I take out and store in bins. I don't have any buckets at all. My sister freezes hers for 2 weeks, then dumps the bag into a ziplock and stores them in bins. She says it keeps the flour, meal etc dry. I haven't had a problem with moisture, maybe a difference in where we live.
