Added this to my preps yesterday. 20# whole wheat flour 15# all purpose flour 45# unbleached white whole wheat flour (Homemade Pasta! ) 1 case of green beans 4# dry pinto beans. not quite 10# of ground beef. 80/20 for $1.99 a pound 2 boston butt roasts, about 4 pounds each at $1.29 a pound 6 - 8 oz containers of black pepper. ($1.79 each) bought it at the discount store, it's the best black pepper I've ever tasted. It's very peppery. Gayle, should dry beans be frozen for a week or two or can they just be put in bins or buckets?

Flagal, I don't freeze my beans, but I don't think it would hurt, especially down south. I have heard of people getting bugs in them, although it's never happened to me.
You're doing great on stocking up - flagal and Sheila. Keep going, as much as you can. I know it gets old, and you'll run out of places to put it, but it's going to be so important soon.

I had to go to town today to get matches, of all things, I needed matches. I didn't want to waste the gas for only matches so I checked out what was on sale.
I got more flour, 15# all purpose. Cornmeal was on sale for $2.08 for 5#. I bought 35# of it.
I got a great price on a gallon of olive oil, it was just a little over $25. I also bought a gallon of safflower oil, it was just less than $15.
Gayle, yesterday evening and this morning I was thinking about what you said about stocking up on matches. The matches weren't on sale but I got five boxes of matchbooks and a three pack of wooden matches. I'll be stocking up on matches now. Thanks for that tip!

Do you know how to make waterproof matches? All you have to do is melt some wax and dip the business end of the matches in it, then let them harden. Voila! Waterproof matches.

I read about how to do that several years ago. I've never tried it. I don't buy candles, except for the cheap emergency one's so I have no wax to do this with.
The only alternative I have is to buy Gulf Wax from the grocery store. That's the kind that used to be recommended to can jelly. What kind of wax do you recommend?

Heck, you can use any kind - old candle ends, used birthday candles, broken crayons, whatever you have. I don't think I'd buy anything special for it, but, then, I have two big tins full of broken crayons.

I am drying 3 trays of mushrooms today. Once they are dry, I should have about a quart of them. I doubt they have much nutrition, but they are good for making plain foods less boring. I like a little variety.

They're good for enriching a vegetable broth.

Even if you don't want to use them in the broth, you can rehydrate them, use the mushrooms in something else, and put the water you used to rehydrate them in your veggie broth. I put it in soup or spaghetti sauce, sometimes. It gives the sauce or broth the mushroom flavor, while freeing up the actual mushrooms for a second dish.

Gayla, my green peppers look kind of black, too. I think they're really just a dark green. Once they're rehydrated they're fine. I just wash, seed, and cut them up, then throw them in the dehydrator. I don't think you have to do anything special to them, such as blanch or cook them. I never have.
I just looked them up in my dehydrator book and it doesn't say they require any special treatment, either.
