This is becoming an obsession!!! The trip to the grocery store today netted me18 cans of Treet at $1 a can, a case of Van Camp's Pork and Beans at 45 cents a can. I got four cans of large ripe olives at $1.28 each. I love them but they are expensive. I got five more pounds of ground sausage at $1.28 a pound. I don't have any more room in my freezer or I'd have gotten more. I also bought two boxes of 20 Mule Team Borax, not on sale. It seems no matter what I do, I can't stop stocking up when I see the sale prices. I need to go back to town Monday to finish paying the bill for having my car repaired. How much do you want to bet I'll go to the other grocery store and get some more canned Keta salmon for $1.54 a can and some canned veggies for 50 cents a can? I didn't spend all my spare cash stocking up, but I spend what I believe I could spare and be able to put back a few dollars. Do any of you feel like this when it comes to stocking up?

I try to add something to my stocks every week. Some weeks it isn't much, depending on what's on sale. This week, all I added was 2 cases of pork and beans (Campbells 4/$1) and 2 cases of Ramen noodles ($4 a case of 24 packs). I would have bought more Ramen noodles, but that was all they had. Our store tends to have their best sales the third week of each month.

I shopped a day early this week. They didn't have a good sale, but I DID get Ivory soap for 25 cents a bar. I got 40 bars - all they had. That ought to last a while.
Otherwise, I just got 15 lbs of sugar, 8 lbs. of dark brown sugar, and some bologna and hot dogs (both were just $1 a pack)

Well, I've just found out how long some of my preps will last! Mike pulled the last jar of mayonaise out of the stock yesterday. I skipped going to Save-A-Lot and Aldi to stock up when we had to pay a big vet bill for the kitty. I didn't think I'd run out of things. Now I really have to build back up as my son pays me back(it's his kitty). I did go to the Mennonite bulk store the other day and got a bag of organic corn meal and more home made soap. Susan

Drats! All the cans of Wild Keta Salmon, at $1.54 a can, were gone. So was the price sticker for them. There goes that source of salmon. The next best thing I could find was Pink Salmon for $1.75 a can. I didn't buy any of those yet.
I bought 15 jars of pasta sauce on sale for $2 a quart jar. It's the World Classics brand. I've never tried it but from reading the ingredients I'm sure I'll like it. Got two more cans of Treet, four cans of green beans, four cans of diced tomatoes and four cans of sweet peas.
I checked out the price of 20 pounds of white rice, the rice I got for $7.35 or something close to that. A 20 pound bag was up to $11.76! I got my 100 pounds in the nick of time. Hopefully by the time this rice is used up the price will have gone back down at least a notch or two. The King Arthur flour I gotten previously, at $2.87 for five pounds, is holding that $4.49.
Three days ago I picked some wild blackberries. They're not all ripe yet but I was able to put three pints in the freezer. I"m hoping to put up a lot more of them this summer. Most of them are small, due to the drought, but the ripe ones are sweet. Yum...

I don't know abuto ya all, but I am going to be canning, and drying like mad over the summer. have too, it is going to get bad I think, money wise. this state that I live in is in a huge hurt any way. no jobs. so I am planning on getting as much done as possible.

Same way here. There's no recovery here, the state is getting desperate for revenue, and the feds are considering that VAT tax which will just push a lot of people who are struggling off the cliff.
I've been getting to be a bigger fan of drying and such since dried food is lighter and easier to carry should I need to leave.

Have you tried drying meat yet. Gayle has very good, very safe instructions for doing that. I can a lot but I've put a good bit of meat up by drying too.

Yeah I've done some of that. I made deer jerky for years so it wasn't too strange to me to dry meat...

The easiest thing to dry is ground beef. I have 30 lbs of hamburger rocks put up. Not so much chicken as I would like. The next time they put the breast meat on sale I'm goin to dry as much of that as I can afford.

I'm waiting for chicken breasts to go on sale on a week that I have extra money. I want to try dehydrating them diced, instead of shredded. I believe it will work and might be useful in different ways from the shredded. I just want to do a few of them first, to see if they'll rehydrate right.
