Hey ladies!
Yesterday I went to Wal Greens and bought 4, 32oz bottles of rubbing alcohol, and 4 smaller bottles of peroxide. I need to get another bottle of ibuprofen this week. I also want to get more black beans, and a big bag of pinto beans, when I go to the store later this week as well.
I'm going to start buying dry milk every payday as well, instead of every other PD.
I'm ahead 50# of flour, and should probably go ahead and get another one this week as well. I have a 50# bag of rice in there that I haven't opened...maybe I should get another one?
We had that deal on coffee a couple of weeks ago, so I'm up two of those. I'm hoping that something is on sale this week, as I'm due to get more, but I'll have to see.

BigM, if you can get it, get more rice. There is a global shortage of rice, so the prices will be going up sharply, if you can get it at all. Some places, in the US, have already started rationing it.

I'm glad I got 100 pounds of long grain white rice before the last price hike. It makes me wonder if I should buy more.
Google "US rationing rice". It isn't good news.
BigM, I agree with Gayle, get more rice. Freeze it three to seven days and store it in a container in a cool dark place.
I read, on one of the links of my google searh, the price of oil is going up. I can get safflower oil, one quart for $3.96. I've been stocking up on that and olive oil too before the price hikes hit me.

me too Gayle, and I think i will take a run to IND. to an amish bulk food store. and get what I can. then take back roads back home. because we are not supposed to get stuff, in IND. and bring it back to this state, because we have a crazy gov. that decided, we can't do that.

Sheila, the rice will last for a while before the buggers hatch and start eating it. Freeze a little bit at a time, whatever you have room for in your freezer, then store it. Debi, I've never lived on a state line but what you're saying seems a bit out of hand for the government. Sheez... if you live on the state line, the nearest grocery store is a mile away, and you have to drive 25 miles or so to get it legally is insane. What's next? People stuffing rice and flour in empty cavities in their vehicles? At least your vehicle will get past the drug sniffing dogs! LOL By the way, the best time isn't in the middle of the night. It's been my experience that rush hour is a good time to do something like this. The cops don't seem to want to mess with people too much during the rush hour.

Sheila, you can also heat it in the oven (200 deg for about 15 minutes). Let it cool thoroughly before putting into containers.
Debi, I don't see how your gov can enforce something like that. That's just so stupid! I'm sorry, but I'm stunned. I've never heard of anything like that, unless it was booze or cigarettes and you were going to sell them. I don't think he can enforce it.

Gayle, TN has a high tax on cigarettes, so they have spotters in border towns watching anyone who buys large amounts of cigarettes. If they head towards the interstate in the direction of the state line, the TN cops are alerted and the person gets pulled over as soon as they cross the line. They put it out in our paper here and suddenly, TN stopped doing the nabbing.

Susan, it's illegal to bring cigarettes into KY, too (at least in large amounts). I'm pretty sure you can bring in some for your own use, though. Heck, you can bring back cigarettes from Canada, if you want (although I don't see why anyone would - they're a lot more expensive over there and they're stronger than American cigarettes)
The thing is, alcohol and cigarettes have state luxury taxes (otherwise known as sin taxes) on them, so, when someone brings in large amounts of them to resell in another state (like buying them in KY, with its low taxes, to sell in TN, with its high taxes) the state they are being resold in lose revenues. Of course, being vigilant about people bringing in large amounts of alcohol or cigarettes is a double win for the states - they don't lose those tax revenues, PLUS they get the money from the fines.

yeah michigan too. I go to INd. all the time shopping in the amish communities, I take the back roads. mostly dirt roads, but I saw a state trooper on one the other day, I was good, I didn't have anything. but I go there all the time to shop. big fine if ya get caught, solution, know the back roads. the trooper was on a paved road, so I made a note of it, and will be taking the dirt roads.

I'm sorry but that is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I always buy Pauls tobacco 15 (5can roll) rolls of snuff once a month. If I lived close to another state that sold it cheaper I'd be goin there.

Stocking up seems to be on my mind every time I go to the grocery store. I hadn't intended on buying everything I did but did it because the prices were right. 24 6oz cans of tuna, 65 cents a can (these days it's going for $1 a 6oz can and I haven't seen it on sale for a long time). 10 cans of diced tomatoes, 4 cans of green beens and 8 cans of peas all at .50 cents each. The normal price for the tomatoes, green beans and peas is usually at least .88 cents each. I also bought 10 pounds of sausage for $1.28 (on sale) a pound. There are no preservatives or msg in this sausage and it comes in one pound tubes. I'm up to about 30 pounds of sausage (on sale) in the freezer now.
I got a 4.25oz jar of garlic powder, another quart jar of raw honey and two cans of Keta salmon. I'm trying to make every trip to town count. I'm getting this stuff before the prices go up, and I'm sure they will. If I end up in a stuff hits the fan scenario I'll at least be able to eat.
I did something I thought I'd never do. Gayle, a post of yours on Carla's forum about Treet made me start thinking I should have more canned meat, just in case. I bought 6 cans of Treet. I'll be stocking up on a lot more of that. When you're hungry that would go good with a pot of rice and beans, greens and cornbread.

Fla Gal, if you like sauerkraut, it's good with that, too. I fix it dozens of ways.

Yes, I like sauerkraut. I like cabbage too. I can boil or fry the cabbage with Treet in it. I'll be able to use it where every I use kielbasa or smoked sausage. It doesn't taste too bad either. It's been years since I've eaten it.
