I don't have any specific links, although I could provide some if anyone can't find them, but I've been reading about making houses out of pallets. I just googled pallet houses and it brought up a bunch of sites. If you had a source of free (or very cheap) pallets, they might make a good house for very little cash. I'm going to show them to my boys later today.
Also, there are plenty of sites with instructions for making furniture out of pallets, so you could furnish it cheaply, too.
If the boys are interested, we'll start looking for sources of free pallets. I'm sure a lot of businesses around here just throw them out.

a word of caution - old pallets have often been soaked with all sorts of toxic spillage - some chemical based toxins can have a LONG shelf life - old pallets often have very sharp and stiff splinters exposed - splinters perfectly able of depositing toxins under the skin -
leather gloves at a minimum - better yet, hire out your pallet reclamation jobs to an obama supporter -

A lot of places sell them back to the people they get them from. Around here, it's unusual to find them being given away. Dave used to get them from the school board when he worked there, but the folks who brought them were quite happy to take them back, too, so he didn't advertise that he grabbed a few. His boss told him it was OK, but not to make a big deal.
