I was lighting the grill tonight and thought of you. I was wondering, when you light your grill, do you put the lid on?
I was wondering because Becky asked me the other day how come her charcoal didn't seem to get hot and it took forever for the food to cook and it tasted like lighter fluid. Turns out, she was lighting it, then putting the lid on. That didn't quite smother the fire, but almost and it didn't get hot enough to burn off the lighter or to cook well.

I don't cover the grill. I have tried covering it, but it went out faster than usual so I quit that. I had the best luck with burning wood in the hibachi, but I think I lost it in the tornado - unless it's in what's left of the shed, which is still full of tools and junk. eta: I just reread your post and I think I know what I'm doing wrong! I don't use lighter fluid!

What the heck?! You have to use something! Either lighter fluid or a chimney! I got one of those chimneys for $6 from Walmart, and I stick a couple of pine cones in the bottom. Fill 'er up with charcoal and light the pine cones and we're off to the races! You can make a chimney out of a #10 can, too. They're cool, they draw the air in from the bottom like a rocket stove.

I use crumpled paper on the bottom, hay or kindling on top of that, and branches or small split wood on top of that.
I'll have to get me some lighter fluid. Truthfully, I forgot all about it.

Yeah, it seems like that would work, what you been doing, but it doesn't get hot enough to light charcoal. Sorry to bring it up. I just want everyone to be grilling along with me.

Oh, believe me, I'm glad you mentioned it! I SO want some grilled chicken! I love having it in the freezer, all cooked and smoky and ready to eat.

You may want to consider making fire starters instead of using lighter fluid. Just coat a couple of cotton balls with petroleum jelly and stick 'em in your kindling. I use dryer lint instead of cotton balls since it's free.

Hey, M, I know those fire starters work for starting wood fires. Do they get hot enough to light charcoal? I might want to use those if they do!

OK, I'll stick with pinecones and a chimney. I have 3 bags of pinecones in the shed just for this.
