Thanks to Valerie for mentioning these and BigM for finding the recipe.
Dishwasher Detergent Cubes
1 Cup Borax 1 Cup Washing Soda 1/4 Cup Epsom Salt Lemon Juice or White Vinegar
Mix all the powders together thoroughly. Stir in lemon juice until mixture is slightly sticky and seems moldable.
Pack mixture into ice cube trays, egg cartons, or molds and allow to dry until hard. Store in airtight container.

I used these for a while, but I have switched back to regular dishwasher soap. I guess the dishes were getting clean, but they just didn't look like it. Spoons were tea stained, and so were the coffee cups. They just didn't look clean enough, and I didn't want guests to think they were dirty. I switched to Palmolive Eco. It's cheap and phosphate free. Seems to be working well!

Well it came out good, like in the picture. I'll let y'all know how it cleans.

The first load got nice and sparkly and I purposely did not rinse the dishes first. I'll let y'all know how it does over time. I think it will be good, since it actually has soap in it, not just powdery stuff and lemon. That powdery stuff kind of left my dishes filmy, I think, even with rinse aid.

That was my experience too Val. I'll give this one a try and see how it goes.

OK, second load, I should have scrubbed out the baking dish that I baked oatmeal cake in. It didn't come completely clean. However, in all fairness, I think the store brand soap I was using before would have done the same thing. My coffee cup got nice and clean, but I rinsed mine out. Dave drank three cups of tea in his yesterday, at work, so it was kind of stained and that didn't come completely off the rim, so I'll need to keep an eye on that. I like the bleaching action of store soap, but don't really want the bleach, so I'll just have to suck it up and wash a cup by hand once in a while!

What would happen if you added some cleanser with bleach to the mix?

It would pretty much defeat the purpose of going chemicl free, so I might as well go back with store detergent. But it would get the cups sparkly white!

Oh, yeah. I forgot about it being chemical free. I was thinking frugal.

That's ok! Sometimes it's really hard to do both!
