They are out and pitched a fit. I had to sing to them to calm them down.

Everything good in chicken land today, Susan? Good for y'all getting that fencing done! I'm sure the girls are loving that nice coop.

Kim, their favorite is 'In the Garden' and second is 'The Old Rugged Cross'.
It's a good thing we did all that fencing, cause Lana came for a visit while we were out in the garden. She's the neighbor's pit bull. I had to shoo her out of the garden and close the gate quick, then Mike got her and hung on to her until her owner yelled for her. As always we yelled back, " She's over here." She's really a sweetie, but even a good dog will go by instinct if they see a chicken. Oh, and the girls are so funny. The run that's on the west end Mike laid a piece of plywood over top to protect from the rain cause the door into the coop is open. So first one, I think it was Esther, slowly comes down that ramp and starts pecking at the grass with her feet still on the ramp. Second girl is half way down the ramp just looking around. They were hiding in the coop and only going out that side that was covered. Guess it felt more like their old pen. This morning all four got out in that run in the grass. I still haven't seen them go out in the run on the other side. Oh, and we're thinking of building nesting boxes with a hinged lid, opening up the back of the coop and adding it on. It's just not big enough for any boxes.

Susan, they probably like the cover because it feels safer. I know mine don't like to be in the bright sun, either. As long as they're in shade, they're happy. They can be out in their field, the sun will come out from a cloud, and they all gravitate right back into the shade. I'm glad this is working for y'all!

And here I thought they just didn't like bright light because they were so used to the dimmer light in that room. Val, I showed your post to Mike and he said he's going to cover the other run. We've got storms coming tomorrow for several days so I think that west side and over part of the coop, so rain doesn't blow in that door on the front, will be covered with a tarp. Then we'll just put the wood over the other run.
