Take a cardboard box and cut off the flaps. Cut a hole in the bottom for the light bulb to fit thru. Cut a hole on the side near the top to let the chicks go in and out. Flip it over so the hole in the bottom is now on top. Take a ceramic light fixture and wire a cord with a plug on it. Put a small wattage bulb in it (I use a 10 watt exit sign bulb) and put another box over the first to cover the fixture and keep the birds off it. Attachments:

Thanks for posting this Kim. You tried to explain it months ago and I couldn't wrap my head around it. I'm more of a visual person. I've printed this out for later.

You're welcome. Hope it comes in useful. I've had so much better luck doing this than any other heat source I've tried.

Cool, I get it now. The small box is actually larger than I pictured it. Sort of small, but still big enough for the bulb to be above the babies and up off the floor. This would be great. That business of raising the light bulb and doing the thermometer is horribly stressful! Plus the books make you think the babies will all drop dead if you miss it by a degree or two. I'd like for them to see baby chicks outside.

Ok, I see it. This is essentially what I'm trying to do in totes I think. Thank you for posting it!
