In one of my Country Side mags there was an article about making a "feeder" for chickens. Essentially you make a contraption to put left over carcasses in so the the birds can eat what ever maggots fall out of the contraption, but not the carcass itself, there by feeding your birds. I was all set to do this when I needed to research botulism in birds for a friend. One of the questions asked was "Have they had access to maggots from a rotting carcass?". Is this feeder a bad idea??

Botulism can come from anywhere, including the soil. I seriously doubt that maggots would be any more likely to cause botulism than any other form of feed. In case you haven't already seen it, this thread from Backyard Poultry, has some good information~ forum.backyardpoultry.com/viewtopic.php?t=7962629The thread ends rather abruptly, with the moderator locking it because it went off topic. I couldn't find any follow-up thread.

Thanks for the link. Looks like maggots are ok for the most part. The whole point of the contraption is that the birds don't get to the meat.
