Hawk!

I had gone into the back room for some rice flour and looked out the window. There was a hawk sitting on the fence gate staring in at the hens in their pen. I stepped out of the room and yelled so loud for Mike that both boys ran out of their rooms too. They all ran out and around back and Robby got to it first with a big piece of metal in his hands. He screamed at it and it took off. The girls were all hiding down in the high grass. We showed Robby where the BB gun is at by the front door. Tomorrow morning Serena the kitten is coming inside. I can't do anything for the other 2 kittens out there, they won't let me near them. So, is it legal to kill a hawk if it's going after our poultry?

It's illegal to kill a hawk, even if it is killing your livestock or pets. HOWEVER, you can get a permit to do so.
Of course, if they don't catch you... (SSS)

Take your gun out there and show it to the bird while yelling "Fear my BANG STICK!!"

Can you put netting or wire over your chicken pen? Or let one of the dogs be near it?

Big pen area, about 20x20 feet. Is there any kind of scare crow that we can put out there?

I had a hawk visiting this morning .It was chasing chickens and almost flew right into me.The roo called as many of them as he could to hide under the bushes ,then he stood outside guarding them.Poppy is such a good guy even if he is just a banty.I finally scared him off, then I was setting outside with a friend when the darn bird came back.It swooped into the dog pen ,grabbed a starling and literally flew just a few feet from us as it left.

Our run is 30 x 20, but we have the entire top covered with chicken wire. We have wires running from corner to corner with tension on them to help hold it up, and a pole in the middle pushing up where it started to sag after the first couple of years.
I don't think hawks are scared of scare crows.

We'd have to find a way to make the fencing higher than 4 ft so we could walk around in it. It's just a big fenced area up against the back of the house. I'll have to read that link.

Oh yeah, that would be an issue. We intentionally built ours tall enough to walk in, from the start. We probably overkilled on our coop (people told us we did) but it's served us well all these years without modifications, so maybe it was a good idea. Hope you find a solution, Susan!

What about one of those fake owls? it's revealing just how often you see those fake owls covered in bird poop - cheapest way to cover the top of a large area is with deer netting - and it will keep out hawks - and from experience i can say it does well protecting rows of berry plants -
