I canned 4 quarts of coffee this morning. I filled the jars with boiling water and let them sit while I made the coffee (I did one quart from every pot and made the rest into iced coffee) then poured out the water, poured in the hot coffee, and put on the lid. All of them have sealed.
I wanted this for when our power goes out. I figure it's easier to heat a cup of coffee than to make a pot with no electricity and no wood stove. You can even do it in a small pan over a candle.
My question is, is it a good idea? Will it keep on the shelf? Will it taste weird?

This inquiring mind wants to know the answer. Thats a good idea.

Interesting! I guess time will tell. Mark your calendar, Gayle, and open one up in some weeks or months, and let us know.

I think that's what I'll do. How long do you think I should wait?

I'd say two weeks, a month, two months and every couple of months after that. Sounds like a good plan. I'm betting it will get stronger the longer it sits.

Normally coffee starts tasting yucky the next day, so maybe try one in a couple weeks, like M said. That sounds like a reasonable schedule.

I tried some of this today and it isn't half bad. It's a teench stronger than usual, but certainly better than no coffee! I think sealing it helps prevent some of the oxidation that gives day-old coffee that 'off' taste.
I'll try another jar in a few weeks and see if it's still satisfactory.

Yay! If it doesn't keep getting stronger with age, maybe you could intentionally brew it a bit on the weak side when you plan to can it!

Or heat it up with hot water to thin it out a bit!

I just added an extra little splash of milk and it was good. I might have just made that pot a bit stronger than normal. I'll see how strong the next one is.

I tried another quart yesterday. I think the first quart I tried must have been stronger than normal to begin with because this one was just fine. It tasted just like the coffee I leave overnight and reheat in the microwave in the morning.
