We went to Rural King yesterday to get seed potatoes and onions. Walked back to look at the chicks and all they had were some black sex link chicks. I'm guessing they'll get more in since it's not that close to Easter. Anyway, I came home and looked up those chicks. They are a hybrid cross of a Rhode Island Red rooster and a Barred Rock hen. Chicks are black and roosters have a white spot on top of there heads. The hens we have now are Rhode Island Reds. We're thinking about getting a few hens and a rooster, so the fellow would have at least 6 or more hens. Would there be any problem mating a black sex link rooster with a RIR hen? I'm not worried about coming out with a specific breed, just want hens that will lay eggs.

Sorry, I just now saw this.
If you aren't trying to get sex linked chicks, the cross rooster will work fine. You'll need an incubator or a good broody hen. Most production breeds don't brood well.
