Our girls are about 14 months old. I noticed a few days ago that their solid dark reddish brown color looks splotchy. That's the only word I can think of to describe it. Some of the feathers are getting lighter on the tips. They aren't losing them yet, just getting lighter in color. The past 2 days they've slacked off in laying also. So I'm wondering, are they getting ready to start molting?

They might be. Or it might just be from the sun. Has it been real hot in your area, or real rainy the past few days? That always makes my girls slack off a bit.

They laid their normal 3 eggs today. It's hotter than normal, hitting about 85 most days. We've had thunderstorms for the past few days.

I agree, heat on the laying and sun fading on the feathers. Don't expect them to molt before fall.
