I was reading where deer don't like the scent of Irish Spring soap and to keep them away from plants like cabbage and green beans, you're supposed to cut up the bar of soap and stick it in a cheesecloth bag and hang it on a post near the area. I just wonder if this works? I recently planted 90 cabbages and deer ate 60 of them. I have saved some of the cabbages by putting an old beehive box over the plant with a screen on top. Supposedly even in the rain if the soap gets wet, it smells even more. Before I go and cut up my husband's favorite soap, I wondered if anyone had real life experience with this idea.

I've used it to deter deer and groundhogs. It worked well. I have also used strips of VCR and cassette tapes. That worked, too.

So did you cut the soap up in pieces and put them in a bag of some kind and hang it on a post? So far, I've been hanging cd's from the wire above the hot wire. They flash a lot in the yard light and moon light like disco lights. They get tangled on the wire in winds, though, so I'm always unwinding them. The other day I went out on the porch and banged on a pan with a piece of wood and that scared away the deer. But I'm sure they would even get used to me doing that!

I saved soap scraps for a year, so cutting it would work. I used pieces of potato bags to hang it by the plants, usually on whatever I was tying the plants to. I think you could also grate it and sprinkle it on the ground around them, but it would have to be replaced about once a month or so.
I am not sure why the VCR tape worked, but I suspect it was because, even in slight moonlight, it looked like fire. I strung it on posts (really just branches I stuck in the ground) around my garden. I left a by-pass gate so I could get in.

Hiya Granny...I just stopped over from the homesteading forum to check your site out...Very nice...Good luck with it.
I noticed the title of this thread and my first thought was-- I wonder how they get the deer to stand still long enough for a bath?

LOL Doc! I probably could bathe a deer. Animals aren't afraid of me. I've had to physically push deer out of my garden.
