I couldn't find the color of sprinkles that I needed, so I tried to make my own. All I ended up with was a mess, so I googled directions and tested some until I found one that worked. I would give the site credit, but I took notes and didn't save the name of the site. Anyway, it's very simple.
Homemade Sugar Sprinkles
1/3 cup of sugar for each color
food color
Heat oven to 200°. Tear pieces of aluminum foil about 4"x6" and lay them flat on a cookie sheet. You can put as many on the pan as you have room for.
Measure the sugar and put each 1/3 cup in a separate small ziplock bag. Make as many bags as you want different colors. Add food color, drop by drop, to a bag, zip it closed, and shake (I rubbed them, too) until color is thoroughly distributed. If necessary, add more color until you like the shade. Now carefully pour it onto one square of foil and spread it evenly with a fork.
Once you have all the colors you want to make on their foil beds, put the pan (or pans) in the oven for 5-7 minutes to dry it out. It will melt it a tiny bit, but that makes it sparkly. Let the pan sit until thoroughly cool, about 15 minutes. Now either crush it with your fingers or break it up enough to put in a jar and shake until there are no lumps remaining and you're done!
I made a rainbow of colors this evening - purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red. To make orange, use red and yellow food color. To make purple, use red and blue. You kind of have to play with it to get the exact color you want, so only add a few drops at a time and mix well, then add more if you need to.
