Can you make a green house? PVC and plastic?
My plants are doing well so far. This cold snap is a little worrisome though.

It would have been a good idea, BigM, but it's too late. I kinda didn't think tomatoes would do well this late, but hoped against hope. It was below freezing before 9 last night and stayed that way until about an hour ago. I'll just compost the mater plants (bring in the little greenies and see if we can eat 'em) and plant something else in those buckets. I was wishing for more space anyway.

Y'all I had to buy just one more packet of seeds today at the hardware store. It was garlic chives and I didn't have any of those!

We went to the hardware store today and got the last 4 bags of dirt I needed to finish my last 2 1/2 buckets and have some leftover for other stuff. They had 4 packs of celery seedlings, and I've always wanted to try them, so I got one. $1.49. And there are actually 8 plants in there, not 4. So if I separate them carefully and they all live and grow, at the current price of celery here, I will get 8 bunches of celery for the price of 1/2 a bunch in the store. And that's not the price of organic celery, which mine will be. Fingers are crossing!

I think I may start some herb seeds soon.

I really need to get my tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant started soon. I'm not allowed to dirt until after tomorrow, but after that, IT'S ON! Even if I wait until April to plant (which I probably can't wait that long) that's only 9 weeks away. Give them a week to sprout, and that's 8 weeks old at planting.

I should be starting tomatoes this month. I've been looking, though, for potting soil at Walmart the last three weeks, and all they seem to have in the garden center are rubbermaid tubs and Christmas clearance. I maybe won't start tomato seeds this year.

Our Walmart put the garden stuff back in garden as soon as Christmas was over. Tell you the truth, though, potting soil is cheaper at Ace Hardware. Unless you want the Miracle Grow. That is cheaper at Wally. I didn't start tomato seeds last year, even though I had seeds in my fridge. Boy was I kicking myself later, when I had to pay $3 EACH!!! for tomato plants at Walmart.
Dave and I have been discussing grocery prices and crop failures and all, and he is getting really motivated. He told me just today that we need to find ways to grow as much as we can, even if it means building things like cold frames etc. He seems to have an urgency about it he's never had before. My gardening has always just been a hobby to him (probably because it didn't produce much).

Woohoo! Tomatoes are sprouting in my "cold frame"! I lifted the lid this morning, since it's warmed up to 65 out there and still dripping, and there they were! Two of the great white tomatoes have sprouted and one of the black cherries. I am glad I went with pots of dirt instead of filling the whole area with dirt. It would have become a favorite bed for the kitties, based on how much time they spend on top of the plexiglass. Hopefully they will be less likely to lay on top of the pots when the lid is up! Anybody who lays on one of my tomato seedlings will earn him or herself a one way trip to somewhere down the road!

Valerie, if you have a piece of chicken wire, maybe you could make a sort of dome over the seedlings for times when you have it uncovered. That should keep the kitties off and save you the trouble of hauling them down the road. They'd just come back anyway. (Ask me how I know LOL)

That's a good idea. So far they haven't messed with them. There are pots of various shapes and sizes, so they really wouldn't be very comfy to lay on.

How much wiggle room do they have? I've had animals knock pots over (over 100 once). It doesn't do them any good.

Well I used mostly 4" pots (so I don't have to transplant) and a couple of 6" pots, and one 4-pack that my celery came in. They are all grouped pretty much in the center, with about 6" or so all the way around the group. The drainspout from the rain gutters also runs in there, so it's kind of soggy, so they don't seem interested. When we came home from Macclenny, the plexiglass was back down, so apparently someone messed with it and it closed. That probably scared the problem right out of 'em!
