Charlie seems to have some kind of fixation on Pearl. Anytime she comes out of the coop, he either chases her back in and tries to mount her, or comes running up and doing his little sideways dance to run her back in. If she even pokes her head out, here he comes, chasing her back in. He walks around with this attitude like as long as she's in there, things are good. I've been shutting him out of the run, so she can come out and eat and drink. Yesterday, I shut him in, and lifted her out through the egg door so she could eat some grass.
Is this a normal rooster thing, or should I consider sending him to "freezer camp" next?

That 'little sideways dance' is a mating dance. He wants to, she doesn't. That's why she goes back inside. It's actually a good thing if you want more chickens, a bad thing if you want only eggs.

That's kind of what I figured, but I don't want her dying of heat exhaustion and dehydration just because she's too stubborn to cooperate. Do you think she'll go that far?
I think he needs to perfect his technique. Max is on, does his thing, and off in like 3 seconds. Nobody screams, they just fluff their feathers and go back to eating. But Charlie seems to have his mind made up he has to have Pearl. He mounted her while ago and he was taking forever; finally she bucked him off and flew up on the roost. When Jackson tries to have a go with her, she chest bumps him and scratches at him with her feet, like a rooster!

Sounds like Pearl is sweet on Charlie and vice-versa.
I have only had one hen die by hiding from the roosters. Everytime she went outside, 6 or 7 of them would jump her. She finally quit going out at all, wouldn't even get out of the nest to eat.
Under normal circumstances, a hen can handle a rooster and won't starve to death.

That's why it's best, imo, to have only one rooster.

In case anyone wondered, Pearl and Charlie have worked things out now. She finally quit hiding from him and now has the run of the place again. He makes sure he keeps her in sight, though. She is definitely HIS CHICKEN. One day she hopped up in my lap, and he had to jump up on the arm of the chair just to be by her.

Let me tell y'all the latest in the saga of Pearl and Charlie. The other day, Charlie was dusting in the sun, and they do so hate to be bothered when they're in the bath. Jackson took the opportunity to do his little dance around Pearl. She turned around super quick, jumped up and chest butted him, and lit into him with both feet! All Charlie had to do was stand up and squawk one time and he went back to his bath. Old Pearlie sent Jackson packin' all by herself. It was pretty funny.

Doesn't sound like she needs a man (rooster) to defend her! My kind of gal!

Yep, it was pretty cute. She's meek as a lamb with ol' Charlie though.
