I have a quilt that has some wear to the top, but structurally it's still fine. It's machine quilted. I have a top and a backing I would like to use and just tie them to this existing quilt. I checked and the fabric of the old quilt doesn't show through the new top or the new backing. I've tied tops/batting/backing before, and expect this to be a little more difficult because of the added fabric layers.
If anyone here has done this before, do you have any tips or tricks?
Thank you!

I dont know if I can make sense of this. I've tied a lot of quilts. The first ones I did wasnt easy but after watching a lady demo how she did it at a quilt show its a snap. She marked dots on the back where she wanted to tie it. Laid the layered quilt over a table. Starting at the middle row of dots she took a piece of yarn that was as long as the quilt was wide plus a little more. Put it in a big needle and starting at the edge she made a stitch thru every dot all the way across. She did that on every line of dots....not all the way to the top or bottom but a few rows on top of the middle line and the a few on the bottom until she had done all the rows. Then she went back to the middle and cut the yarn in between the dots and tied them. After she got them all tied in square knots she went back and trimmed them all even. Oh, yes, the very first thing she did was pin the layers together. I hope this makes sense. I dont always tie with yarn. Sometimes I use embroidery thread.

I've been thinking about this and was wondering how you will fasten the quilt top to the old quilt at the sides? A blanket stitch with yarn that matches the ties would be cute, and effective.

Meemo, that's how I tie quilts too, so I understood exactly what you meant! CP, I will probably put on a binding and machine stitch through all the layers once it's all stitched together. Not sure if that makes sense or not. I'm also toying with the idea of tying it every 12" or so, then machine quilting it on my sewing machine...except I'm not sure I can get it wound up enough to get to the middle part (it's a queen size).
