These are the last 2 I've made. The first one was made out of fabric scraps and the second was from faded or torn tee shirts. Its real soft to stand on. Now for the funny....The second one was supposed to be an oval. It started out that way but the more I worked it the rounder it got. I just gave up and let it be round.

Those are so nice! Forgive my ignorance, but why are they called toothbrush rugs? And how do you make them? I have a lot of fabric on hand....

Of all the rugs I make these are the easiest. The tool you make them with is a toothbrush. The problem I'm having now is finding a toothbrush with a hole in it. You cut the brush end off and whittle the end smooth and slightly rounded. Cut the hole in the other end out a little bit and use it to make the rugs. Another computer friend and I have made one from different things. Like a ruler. This one is from a toothbrush. These I made from a ruler. Dont use one with the metal strip. These arent the finished product. I found them to be too wide so I whittled them a little thinner.

looks like the tool at the lower left would be limited to measuring things five inches or less ?

Meemo, there might be other things (like maybe the handle of an old feather duster?) that would have a hole for hanging and would work. I'm going to have to do some research about this - it is so pretty and looks like something I could pick up/put down from time to time.

It really doesnt matter what it is as long as there is a hole or slot in one end that you can pull your material strips thru. The other end needs to be rounded so it will go thru the hole...like crochet. And it needs to be slender enough to go thru easily. My computer friend is going to try to make one from a tongue depresser. She's goin to try a popsicle stick but I dont think its wide enough to make a hole without splitting the wood. Of course if you get tired of trying to make it yourself you can order it online. They cost around $20. These rugs make up quickly and since you dont sew anything they arent very labor intensive. Joan, you dont need to measure anything. I just used the ruler because it already had holes in it.I just cut it in half and whittled on it.

:)Joan, I figured you were... Your coat hanger idea isnt really off base. The youtube video I used to remind me how to start one of these rugs shows where she made one out of a wire coathanger and some tape. I'm trying to find it again. I took a class nearly 30 yrs ago but when I wanted to start making them again recently I couldnt remember how to start one. If I can find the video I'll post it. This is the best site for instructions. Very easy. ragrugcafe.com/toothbrush-rugs-complete-video-instructions-part-1-beginners
