Gayle, you're so crazy! It's hard to imagine you without a printer. ;D

Mine got snowed on. A friend gave me two printers, but I think it would be cheaper to just buy another cheap printer than to buy ink cartridges for either of the ones he gave me. The cheap one comes with cartridges for about the same price as the cartridges for the kind he has. (and I know it will work)

Yeah, we can get a good printer/scanner/copier here for $50 at Walmart and the ink cartridges are about $13. For some reason, though, they don't work for me when I refill them. I've wasted lots of ink refilling them and then they don't work.

The last printer I bought, an HP, was $29 and included both ink cartridges. New cartridges for my old printer would have been $34. I had a refill kit that I got for $40 that will refill a cartridge 50 times. (once the color ink is gone, I print everything in black) I can refill a cartridge about 4 or 5 times before it has to be replaced.
The trick to refilling cartridges is to insert the needle all the way, then pull it out a little before you slowly squirt in the ink. Squirt in the ink till it bubbles out a little then allow the cartridge to sit upsidedown for 15 minutes, then rightside up for another 15 minutes. Wipe it clean with alcohol, reinsert it in the printer and print a test page to get rid of any excess ink and get it flowing evenly.

Maybe that's my problem. I do the needle thing like that, but I never do the upside down, right side up thing. I usually just wipe it down with alcohol and stick it back in the printer. When I have turned them upside down in the past a ton of ink leaked out all over the place. How do you keep it in?

I don't. I put a piece of tape over the hole, then turn it over on several layers of newspaper and just let the excess run out. The times I skipped that step it leaked all inside of my printer and made a huge mess. That's when I decided I'd rather have an easy-to-clean mess than one that was nearly impossible to clean.
One other thing, if you get it on your table, alcohol will take it off. If it leaves a slight stain, clean it with baking soda (for formica) or wood or cigarette ashes mixed with mayonnaise (for wood) Best to do it on something that isn't wood, though

Oh yeah. I would do it on my kitchen counter. Probably would be better to do it on the dining room table, though. It has a thick piece of glass over it.

so i guess making one out of stainless steel would be out of the question ? You might be able to if you got it thin enough, but aluminum would be easier. Hey, wait a minute... pop cans!
