I bought 5 gallon buckets at "The Mart" to store food in. Then a friend told me that I have to use mylar bags inside the buckets. Is that true?

No, but it's not a bad idea in case of a disaster. The things I had stored in containers with only a lid were destroyed (mostly), while things I had in ziplocks survived just fine, whether they were in other containers or not. The reason is, when something heavy falls on a container, it's most likely going to either break the container or knock off the lid. Flexible containers, such as ziplocks or mylar, don't break open as easily.

That stinks. I'm having a really hard time getting myself to buy the bags and O2 absorbers at the same time.

I just use ziplocks and no O2 absorbers. I have very few things go bad and, when they do, it's usually something I've done wrong - like not drying something thoroughly enough or bringing in something that I know could have bugs.

How long do you plan to store this stuff for? If it is no longer than a couple of yrs, run the food thru the freezer for two weeks then put in the buckets and sel and you will be ok. Don't use O2 absorbers in the bucket with no liner. It can suck the sides of the bucket in and they are very prone to stress cracks.

Hmmm, I think I'll look into the "giant" ziplocks and maybe put a couple in one bucket. Thanks for the help!

I had a bunch of those o2 things given to me, but they all turned pink, which meant they got o2 in them, and all I was doing was opening the bag long enough to take a some out to use. so no I don't use them.

I was told when using to O2s you have to move really quickly. I've got bags, O2s, food, and a few buckets. I'm going to look around today and see if I can find a guide on how much a bucket will hold of this or that. I don't want to get started and run out of buckets.

M, go to rainy day foods (walton feed) online and look at the quantities they have in the buckets. They sell by th 6 gallon bucket so you'll need to figure the diff on 5 gal.
