Val, you can buy a lid with the built in handwasher but it'll set you back at least a couple hundred.

i remember reading about mao and his hordes of red army country boys when they took over the major cities in china - they were absolutely amazed that it was possible to build so many homes directly over a flowing spring -

That's right, they use those squat plates a lot in China, don't they? I remember in France in 59 or 60 there was one in the hotel we stayed at. I was rather amazed at it, but Mom showed us what to do. LOL

I didn't find any that cheap, Sheila.
We have tankless toilets or I'd see about getting one of those.
