Well on the 23rd we fired up the grill one last time. Our son was coming to visit and wanted some brats on the grill, so despite the 20 degree temperatures we had brats from the grill. They were fantastic.

I haven't had a single cookout this year. I DID try smoking something, but couldn't get a fire lit.
I'm planning on making a rocket stove. Maybe I'll have better luck with that.

ROFL! Gayle, you know what I'm thinking!!!
I haven't cooked out as much this year as I used to. Heck, I haven't cooked as much, period, as I used to. The wheels fell off somewhere along the way, and I've been trying to get my cooking groove back on!
Normally, I cook out more in the winter than the summer. It's just too hot to stand there over an open fire, in the summer.
Gayle, on that rocket stove idea, do yourself a favor and use a little bit of charcoal lighter fluid to get your fire started.

Valerie, I will do that! I usually just try to get it going with newspaper and cardboard. That ain't the best way.
You'd think, with all the Cherokee in me, I'd be able to start a fire. I can if it's in a wood stove or on the ground, but a grill throws me off for some reason. Of course, it doesn't help that I've tipped over several of them (WITH fire in them!) It might be best for me to go back to cooking in a firepit.

You seen those Dakota firepits? That's a pretty cool way of cooking in the ground.

I hadn't seen them so I googled. That's pretty cool and looks safer than the way I usually do it.

Would use kind of the same principal as a rocket stove, but would work if you don't have any bricks. Don't take a ton of wood either, like doing a campfire. I noticed with the rocket stove, it only takes about 20 - 25 minutes to be ready to cook, too.

It's nice that the fire is underground. Less likely to start a wildfire. AND, the best part, it can't tip over!

Kim, I imagine cooking outside is something you hope not to do again. That's how I feel about living in a camper. Been there, done that (twice), hope not to do it again!

I could live in an RV ok if just me, but Bethany puts a whole 'nother spin on it. She needs her space and I need a washer/dryer to handle all her excess laundry.
