I'm moving my garden. Where we originally had it just didn't get enough sun. We're going to have a row of pine trees removed and put the garden there.
What we're trying to figure out is whether to do a raised bed, or just till up the grass. Any thoughts?
If we do a raised bed, we also need to figure out what to make it of, so thoughts on that would be appreciated.

If you have a choice, I would definitely go with raised beds.
Also, do a ph test on the soil. I don't know about in PA, but down here, pine trees tend to acidify the soil. If it's too acid you can add some lime.
If you do raised beds and they're deep enough, though, you might get away with not worrying about the pH from the trees!

I vote for raised as well. You can make them out of anything that will hold really. I know people who have used cinder blocks, we used untreated wood... anything really. It can get expensive though if you have to buy the materials. It's amazing how much easier it is to bend down to that 12" box to pull a couple of errant weeds than it is to bend down to the ground and pull up what ever grew back. I suppose you could put paper or card board down between the plants for weed control.

If the new garden site is close to where the trees were, you'll have a hard time tilling it because of the roots still in the ground. I'd go with raised beds.

Oh man, I forgot about roots! Definitely go with raised beds!!! Ain't much worse than trying to work ground that's full of roots!

Good point. Though at least the trees are over the hill.
