For those who used to go to Karen's old Cooking and Crafts forum, this was posted there by cowgirlone. I've been using this recipe for nearly 9 years. It's a good one!
Flour Tortillas
2 C. flour 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking powder 1 Tbs lard 1/2 to 3/4 C warm water
Mix dry ingredients, add lard and mix til it looks like cornmeal. Add 1/2 C. warm water. Mix well and add more water (if needed) 1 Tbs at a time til the dough can be formed into a ball. Let the dough rest 15 minutes.
Divide into 12 portions and shape these into balls. On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball out into a 7 inch circle. Cook in a hot ungreased skillet about 1 1/2 minutes per side.

I made 6 batches today. Here are some pictures~ Four dozen tortillas (I make 8 per recipe, instead of 12)~ To give you an idea of size, here are a dozen of them in a gallon ziplock~

hmmm, your's are a lot thicker than mine, which I like actually better. I wonder, if I make mine to thin. I'm impressed how round you get them, mine look more like octagons or something like that.

I have made mine smaller and thinner, but it took so many to fill up these kids, I started making them thicker and bigger around, so I wouldn't have to make so many. Turned out we liked them better this way.

I've thought about buying a tortilla press, but then thought maybe the pasta machine would do as well and I already have one of those. Bethany loves tortillas, I just have to make her some gluten free ones.

Oh, CC! What a great idea! I had a tortilla press - what a disaster. But I have a pasta maker and I understand exactly what to do with that.
I had quit bothering because the kids loved them, and they would gobble them up SO fast...the mess and grief wasn't worth it. They didn't last long enough for the effort I put in.
Tortillas, here I come!

My tortilla press is too small for flour tortillas. I got it for making corn tortillas, but have never been able to make good ones from scratch.
I never thought about using the pasta machine. That's a good idea, especially if you want to make chimichangas or hot pocket pizzas. For those, I think the tortillas are better very thin because they get crisper when you fry them.

hmmm, good thing I never bought me a tortilla press then. I suppose I just roll them. Gayle, I think I'm gonna use your tortilla recipe from now on. Those tortillas look so good.... I'm gonna have to try them. We pay 1.29 € for 8 small ones, so I can definitely make them a lot cheaper than buying them and they taste better. I can taste the additives in the store-bought ones. blech.

They really do save a ton of money. The big flour tortillas are $2.25 for 8 of them here (there used to be 10 of them and they were 79¢) At that rate, the ones I made would have cost around $11! (Ok, I'm officially shocked! I hadn't done the math till now) They cost me around $1.50 to make.
I can taste the additives in the storebought ones, too. It kind of makes them bitter or something. Not good.

I don't like the store ones either, but Bethany has to have gluten and corn free so she has to have it all made from scratch.

I learned to make everything from scratch because my oldest daughter couldn't have additives (or a lot of other stuff) when she was young. Back then, there was no such thing as organic or anything-free, so, if you needed them, you had to make them. It's hard at first, but becomes part of the natural rhythm of your life after a while.

Since we are stateside now I buy tortillas for dh and me. When we lived in Lithuania I made them because with the exchange rate one tortilla cost .25! YES, 4 for 1 dollar! Will admit I did enjoy making them.

I made these the other day. They really taste good. I was having my usual rolling difficulties that I have when doing pie crust, though. I swear I'm a mess with a rolling pin! Anyway, my were not worthy of pictures, but they were tasty!
