I made a batch of this today. The styrofoam beads are a mess to work with, they want to go everywhere, but the floam is kind of fun to play with. Next time, I think I'll make it outside on the porch. Less clean-up.
Floam
2 tsp. borax 3/4 cup water 1/4 cup Elmer's Glue-All (not school glue) food coloring ziploc bag 1 and 1/3 cup of polystyrene beads* *You can substitute 2/3 cups micro-beads (1 mm from Jo-Ann Fabrics) and 1 cup bean bag filler (1/8"). You can also grate styrofoam cups or packing peanuts. (I grated a hunk of styrofoam packing)
1. Mix borax and 1/2 cup of water. 2. In another bowl, mix glue and 1/4 cup of water. Add food coloring. 3. Pour the glue solution into the bag. Then, add 3 tbsp of the borax solution, do not mix. 4. Add the polystyrene beads. 5. Seal bag and knead by hand until mixed. Let the bag stand for 15 minutes. Then knead for a few more minutes.
Store in ziplock bag or other air-tight container.

What kind of texture does it have? Do the beads melt?

No, they stay suspended in a rubbery 'clay'. It's kind of messy to play with because some of the styrofoam balls escape while you're playing with it. You can use the rest of it to dab them up, though. Belinda and I had a little fun with it, then the boys got involved and there was styrofoam all over the place because they were throwing it at each other. They cleaned it up (under threat )

My kids used to have floam! I loved that stuff! It was better than slime because you could actually do something with it, but still gooey and fun to mess with. I made a little pig with some one time, even with a little curly tail. It came out so cute, they wouldn't squish it back into the container and it dried hard as a rock. I had him in my kitchen window for years. He might still be around here somewhere.
