Mine used to turn black as well. I never liked the taste of them after being dried. Seems like they were bitter so we just started freezing them.
Today I bought saltine crackers, real bacon pieces, garlic powder, dried minced onion, coffee and powdered creamer (yuck, but better than nothing).
Wal-Mart has the large container of Folger's on sale for $5.25. It's usually $6.98 here. I thought that was a good buy.
Also, they have 5 lbs. potatoes for $1.87. I bought another bag. As soon as we find our vegetable slicer, we're going to get some potatoes in the dehydrator.

Gayle, I know you said stocking up could get old but I'm liking this. I got another 20# of dry Pinto beans and 8# of dry baby lima beans.
Cling peaches packed in pear concentrate were on sale 10 for $9, there were only a dozen, I bought them all. Diced tomatoes in a 28 oz can was only $1.03, there were 16 cans, I bought all of them. I found White House apple sauce, sweetened with apple juice, in 2lb 14oz jars for $1.98. There were only six left, you guessed it, I bought them all. I also bought a quart jar of honey, one gallon of white vinegar, three boxes of book matches, another gallon of safflower oil and a four pound bucket of lard, that was the largest size I've seen in this town. I also scored another 3 1/2 gallon food grade bucket.
Next I went to the discount store across the street and bought all their undented cans of diced tomatoes (17 cans). I also got green beans (20 cans), whole kernel corn (10 cans), and sweet peas (10 cans). All of these were .50 cents a can. I also got 5 more 8oz containers of black pepper for $1.79 each and 5 10oz bottles of Louisiana Supreme Worcesteshire Sauce for $1 each.
I'm sitting here surrounded by groceries and a few other things. I love it. Times may get hard but I'll eat good for at least a while. By the way, the price on four pounds of Pinto beans had gone up from $3.88 to $4.25. I bit the bullet and bought them. They'll just be higher after this shelf full is gone.
Carla, that was an excellent price on the potatoes!

I dried 14 bell peppers and 2 big stalks of celery yesterday. I ended up with a quart of peppers and a pint of celery. For some reason, my bell peppers didn't turn dark this time. I didn't do anything different, just diced them and dried them, like always. I wonder what made the difference.

My parents ( the non-stockers) called me yesterday. They went to the store yesterday and were shocked. In just a few days milk, bread, eggs and meats have all gone way up. Sh esaid she needs to get a bread maker before they can get flour . I can't figure out what that has to do with anything. Dh and I ran to Costco yesterday while the grandson was at daycare. we went to compare prices and I ended up getting a few things. 11lb bag of brown rice 2 large cans of coffee 1 #10 can of baked beans 4 chickens 48 lbs of rounds DH and I cut a couple roasts, finger steaks and the rest went to burger. Did find out we need another meat grinder. Case of organic chicken broth 4 lb strawberries and 2 more blueberry plants 5lb bag of garlic Almost forgot about the granulated garlic

Went to one of the local grocery stores today.
I got on sale: 5 - 28 oz cans of diced tomatoes $1.03 each 10 - 15 oz cans of sliced peaches in pear concentrate 10 for $9.00 8 - l pound packages of breakfast sausage $1.28 each (they're normally $1.79 each)
I also stocked up on four more pounds of dry baby limas, two pounds of dry red kidney beans, two pounds of unsalted butter and one quart of honey.
I stopped at the bakery department. The nice young lady smiled at me, she knew why I was there, and said she had 8 buckets. She gave me three 2 gallon, three 3 1/2 gallon and two 5 gallon buckets. Life is good!
I'd have spent more but I'm starting to replace the money I socked back and spent on stocking up. I'm ready for a dehydrator so I can take advantage of the deals on fresh veggies like Debi got on celery.

Got two more pounds each of dry red kidney beans and dry baby limas. Two containers of oatmeal, store brand. It was almost $1 cheaper than the Quaker brand. Got a case of Barillia spaghetti sauce (four different types), regular price $2.49 a quart for $2 a quart. Also got 10 more cans of Keta Salmon.
I bought 5 Green Bags when I was there. They were .99 cents each. There was a .05 cent refund, per bag (total .25 cents), for not using plastic bags. At that price it won't take long for the green bags to pay for themselves.
