Mine love pine cones, too. We did some work on the rabbitry this weekend and now mine have a bunny corral where I can let them dig and wallow a little. They LOVE it. Hubby and I emptied that stall of all the scrap wood and junk, moved FIL's steel gang box, and now it's a really functional space. I've got wire under all 4 rabbits, so no more cleaning trays or litter boxes. When I get enough poop on the floor (when have you ever said that?) I'll put some boards around the bottom of the legs and put some worms in there to help feed the chickens and improve garden soil.
It's sure nice having rabbits again!

LOL, throw some safe for bunnies sticks in the cage and they will entertain themselves with it. Thank goodness. My 5yo is determined the rabbit needs a toy...now maybe I'll let him get her one.

Mrs. Robinson (that's our rabbit's name) was 8 weeks old on Tuesday. She is very interested, watches us in the morning, comes up to see anyone who approaches the hutch, etc.
And, she's kind of nervy.
First, we've (finally) figured out that she's intentionally urinating outside her hutch. Caught her. I've checked, and so far, she still looks like a she down there.
Then today, she was out of the hutch for a bit with one of the boys - our oldest, who is very gentle. He went to pick her up - he did NOT hurt her - and she gave him some "lip." She made this noise - basically, "Get outta here, kid, I'm busy," and it worked, she intimidated him. I went over scooped her up, chided her for scaring kids, and popped her back into the hutch (which I have learned, in rabbit world, stinks).
Are there lots of nervy rabbits?

Of the 4 I have right now, Shadow is a little fiesty sometimes, but not really like you've described. I had an Angora doe that was rotten. The only rabbit that made me consider wearing gloves. She was a good mom, though.

Can rabbits have any pine cones, or only certain ones? Obviously we wouldn't want them chewing any with bug spray or other bad stuff on them, but does it matter what kind of pine tree it comes from? Becky could take some of ours home for Bun.

None of my meat rabbits were particularly friendly, but I don't think any ever growled at me. I have chickens that will growl.

Valerie, I would have to say that I don't know for sure. The most common, by far, around here is Ponderosa Pine, and that's what my friend was using, and so that's what I use too, since they are so common here.

None of my meat rabbits were particularly friendly, but I don't think any ever growled at me. I have chickens that will growl. It wasn't exactly a growl - more like a hoarse bad-tempered squeak. But clearly born of annoyance. I was mainly surprised because I'd only ever heard of rabbits making noise when they were in extreme distress/pain/danger. Live and learn. Another animal who needs to learn she's not the alpha, that's all.

Well I did it! I'm on bunny watch! I bred my first doe last Friday. I'm not exactly sure how old the buck is, so I was guessing based on what the previous breeder told me as to whether or not he was mature enough. I moved the doe to his cage and knew after approximately 2.3 seconds that he is indeed mature enough! lol I left her in there until she started growling at him to leave her alone. I put her back in with him on Monday for a "pregnancy test" and she was positive. (As in positive she wasn't going to tolerate him. She actually sat on her haunches and boxed his poor head!!) I bought tool totes that are about 12" by 8.5" for nesting boxes, but they seem awfully small. Any thoughts?

Yay, M! Hope you have successful bunnies! (If it was chickens I'd say hatch, but I don't know how you say that about bunnies, but you get the idea! )

I bred my does a week and a half ago or so, and attempted to palpate them today. I think I felt babies in one doe. I'm going to ask my friend to palpate them on Wednesday and see what she thinks. I'm hoping to at least learn something if I can.
