OK, I don't know what exactly to call what I'm looking for.
You know how hamburger helper comes with pasta and sauce mix, and you add meat and water and let it cook?
I'm thinking how we could make something like that at home to store in jars and have ready. I would put in some dried meat, though, pasta or rice, some kind of sauce mix or soup base, and seasonings.
Do you have any ideas, recipes, suggestions? How would I know how much of each thing to put? Also, how would I know how much water it would take, and that the finished product would actually fit in a skillet?
I never do know how much water to use with rehydrating stuff. I'm thinking if there is some ratio, I could measure how many cups the skillet holds, and break it down from there somehow.

There are some ready-made recipes here~ grandmaw.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=mixes&action=display&thread=674If you prefer to make your own, you could make homemade gravy mix and pack it with 3/4 cup of dried meat (equals about a pound once it's rehydrated) and noodles or rice (measurements per serving are on the package) When I rehydrate foods I usually figure about the same amount of water as I have dried foods. So, if you end up with a total of 3 cups of dry ingredients, I'd start with about 3 cups of water or maybe a little more. If it turns out that's not enough, you can add more during cooking. Also, instead of gravy mix, you could use spaghetti sauce mix.

Thanks, Gayle! That helps a lot! Way better than trying to start from zero.

If you like the Italian Hamburger Helpers (spaghetti, lasagna, etc) I highly recommend the spaghetti sauce mix. It's terrific. I think it tastes a lot like Prego once it's made (I add dehydrated tomato powder to it, so it doesn't need any additional tomato products, just water)
