We were going to have soup, but DS forgot to get the hamburger out this morning, so I don't have time to let it simmer. Instead, we'll probably have sloppy joes. I might even put some cheese in them.

I don't even soak my beans. I used to, but I kept reading about others who didn't, so I tried not soaking them. They tasted so much better! I never soak them anymore. Gayle, how long does it take for beans to get done without soaking them? Did you add baking soda to them to help with the ah... um... musical fruit thing happening?

I have added baking soda, but the kids have so much fun 'playing music', I hate to spoil it for them. The beans usually only take between 2 and 4 hours if you don't soak them (in other words, about the same time as when you soak them). Timing depends on how old the beans are (older beans take longer) and what kind they are (smaller beans cook faster). This is the only way I've found to give Pinto beans a nice, rich, deep brown broth. It's more flavorful, too.

Not adding the baking soda sounds like it gives your kids something to do for fun time. My oldest brother and I used to have 'musical' contests. Drats, he always won. I guess I didn't eat enough beans.
Funny story, when I was about five years old I asked my Grandmother how much gas do beans give you. She laughed her usual amused Granny laugh and said "It depends on how many beans you eat."
Thanks for the information on cooking beans. I love the rich broth from them. I love to eat beans in a bowl, on top of bread or cornbread, a lot of broth and a lot of chopped raw onion. Maybe that's why I never won the contests!

Seems like that onion would just give you more deadly ammunition. LOL
I like to put some chow-chow in my beans. The vinegar actually reduces the gas, too.

Sheila, I'm sorry to hear y'all are under the weather. We had a very traditional Easter dinner consisting of beef stir-fry with oyster sauce. It was really good. Now I'm going to start stocking oyster sauce. We're going to church at 5:00 and probably eating with the group after. So, I'm going to open up some canned black beans, Rotel tomatoes and brown a little turkey ham to throw in it. That's cheap, fast, good eats.

We had a change in our Easter dinner. I still made the ham, but we had couscous and corn with it. No dessert, since everyone gorged themselves on candy all day.

I've been on a roll this morning. Before noon, I already had supper cooked, including dessert.
We're having chili, cornbread, and mock apple pie.

I can't decide what to make for dinner tonight. I'm going to have to look at the recipe book here!
I have already boiled eggs for tuna salad for lunch though. Does that count?

Sure it does! I don't know why, but lunch is the one meal I always forget to plan. It isn't like we don't eat it everyday, either. I know we need stuff for it, but it never occurs to me to make anything, so we usually eat leftovers or PBJs.

I have got to figure out what to cook for supper, too.
I got spoiled with everyone bringing meals for so long. Friday evening my neighbor who runs a take out resturant called and sent over a bunch of leftovers, too.
So....now I have to plan meals, again....
